The Specification Process For Double Disc Pump Bids. Concerns by a Competitor

Wastecorp was recently exhibiting our newest double disc pumps for the municipal wastewater treatment market and industrial fluid handling space, when we were approached by a consulting engineer who mentioned that there was a double disc pump project out for bid. The engineer mentioned that the project was for the primary sewage treatment pumping equipment section of a complete plant refurbishment at a large municipality in Texas. They noticed the Sludge Pro Double Disc Pump was not named in the specification. Wastecorp, the manufacturer of Sludge Pro Double Disc Pumps was shocked and surprised. Large and small consulting engineering firms that work with municipal public works projects are almost universally aware that there are at least two competitors in the double disc pump manufacturing industry. One of the reasons why Wastecorp exhibits at regional water quality conferences is to build awareness with WWTP operators and consulting engineers that competition exists in the double disc pump space and the market offers a more robust alternative than traditionally known.

Double Disc Pump Planning and Bid Stage

We have noticed that when a double disc pump for a WWTP upgrade or expansion goes to the planning stage and/or bid stage, we get calls from consulting engineers saying that the competitor or their pump distributor make misleading or incomplete statements about double disc pump competition. What it boils down to is trying to eliminate competition. In America, we call this an attempt to create a monopoly. History has shown that monopolies are seldom good for competition in the pump business or any other business for that matter. History has also shown that monopolies in the United States aren’t looked at favorably by either regulators or the public.

Retirements and New Hires at Engineering Firms and Sewage Treatment Plants

In the last few years there has been an evolution in the double disc pump manufacturing business and with retirements at consulting engineering firms like and sewage treatment facilities. As new engineers, engineers in training (EITs),  pump operators and city officials take over, it is important to know the facts and for the education process to continue. New engineers especially may have questions about how a double disc pump works for primary sludge transfer, lime slurry pumping, return activated sludge, Belt filter press feed applications, screw press feed and tanker loading.   Engineers or EIT’s should arrange a quick presentation (less than an hour) with the double disc pump manufacturer to understand how the technology works and what pump options are available for the project they are working on. Municipal workers and operators at wastewater treatment plants have the same opportunities to learn about the double disc pumps available. Styles of Double Disc Pumps Available

There are generally two categories of double disc pumps: The first category is the induced flow principal style double disc pump. The second is the reciprocating style double disc pump. Both styles of double disc pumps feature no regular maintenance and replaceable components for low cost of ownership.
